EXTEND YOUR SAFARI: Red starfish on Zanzibar Island
The name Zanzibar conjures up images of an exotic island, filled with mystery and intrigue.
As a result of passing traders that explored this route, Zanzibar has also become known as the ‘Spice Island’ and has a rich cultural history. The island is located 45 miles off the coast of Dar es Salaam and is surrounded by tropical beaches and coral reefs. The labyrinth of narrow streets wind through the main Stone Town, where you can find many of the traditional spices in tucked-away markets. This fascinating town has amazing architecture with its Arabic, African and European influences most notablythrough the huge, ornately carved wooden doors. The coastal waters attract divers from all over the world whilst the white sand beaches are the place to sit and relax after a safari. There are regular flights from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar.
South of Dar es Salaam on the main Tanzania coast, there are also some excellent beaches. Our favourite is Ras Kutani which has four kilometres of white sandy beach.

Weather
Due to its proximity to the equator the climate is generally warm year round ranging between 25°C to 30°C, with warm Indian Ocean breezes. There are two rain seasons, the ‘short rains’ fall November to December whilst the ‘long rains’ between February and into early May. The best time to travel to Zanzibar is between December and March and July and October.
