Grenada

RELAXATION: Tropical white sand beach

Southernmost of the West Indies’ Windward Islands and named the “Spice Island”, Grenada is one of the most fertile and beautiful of the Caribbean islands.

Grenada is also one of the more sleepy islands and until recently had an easy-going approach to tourism. Today however, the island welcomes visitors to a number of excellent hotels on its beautiful and extensive beaches.

Grenada’s interior rises skywards in such a tropical profusion that you would be forgiven for believing the island was larger than it is. The lush green valleys and mountain slopes are volcanic in origin and dense with nutmeg, cacao, cinnamon and ginger plantations. The French and British fought for many years to control the island and the Anglo-French pedigree is well captured in the attractive hillside capital of St. George’s, with its picturesque houses, quaint streets and colourful harbour. Away from St. George’s and the beaches, the island offers endless trekking opportunities in the national parks where many different eco systems are found, including dry tropical forest and lush rainforest.

British Airways flies on a Tuesday to Point Salines International Airport and runs an additional flight on a Friday in the winter. Flights are from London Gatwick and touch down in Antigua. Virgin Atlantic offers a weekly Thursday service with a touch down in Tobago.
