Argentina
BREATHTAKING: Iguazu Falls from the Argentine side
Argentina is big, beautiful and unbelievably glamorous. Everything begins in Buenos Aires, the ‘Paris of Latin America’ with open-air cafés spilling onto wide avenues and elegant boulevards lulled by the romantic sounds of the tango.
With South America’s best museums, theatres and art galleries as well as designer boutiques and fashion displays to rival anything in Europe or America – there is no shortage of things to do and see. Make time to take in a proper tango show, visit the Recoleta cemetery with Eva Peron’s grave and tour the old port, now brightly-painted and buzzing with this city’s creative flair.
Step out of the capital and discover a vast and beautiful country. Towards the Brazilian border the Iguazu Falls thunder in myriad waterfalls through a primeval jungle region. In the pampas of the south, football is forgotten and polo has taken over. Seals and penguins frolic in the wild waters of the South Atlantic, while the west rears up into the mighty Andes, a natural border whose foothills are ideal for hiking and exploring on horseback. Follow the mountains down across the Patagonian steppes, as snow dusts the peaks amidst beautiful lakes and majestic glaciers and on to Tierra del Fuego, the ‘uttermost end of the world’.
Although distances are vast, Argentina’s attractions are superbly accessible with good roads and a network of regional airports.
