Bolivia

CHRIST STATUE: biggest in South America at Cochabamba, Bolivia.

For some, its history of political turmoil has removed Bolivia from their travelling radar. However those who go are rarely disappointed, rather it is hard to find many who are left unmoved by the magic, warmth and charm of South Americas Andean jewel.

Bolivia’s geographic location is such that it can claim to be one of the most diverse nations in Latin America. It is a country where the lofty Andes fall away to the lowland majestic jungle. To the east lies the Amazon, an area of the world that's magnificence needs no introduction. To the west lie the Andean mountains, rich in culture and beauty. Lake Titicaca, the worlds highest lake is certainly a highlight. With its alluring blue water and owing to its massive size, you need reminding that it is a lake and not a beautiful calm ocean. Within the lake, ancient Inca islands, namly the Island of the Sun and the Moon, offer a great opportunity to connect with history whilst surrounding yourself with rich colour and beauty.

Bolivia's two main cities are La Paz and Santa Cruz. Their difference is symbolic of Bolivia's cultural differences. At nearly 3500m above sea level, La Paz, Bolivia's de-facto capital, is the highest capital on earth. Its streets are laden with indigenous Andean culture. Santa Cruz on the other hand is warmer and has a more colonial feel. Other poignant highlights include the salt plains near to Chiles border, the mines at Potosi and the colonial grandeur of Sucre, Bolivia’s offical capital city.

Discover Bolivia and you will have discovered South Americas best kept secret.
