COLOURFUL DOMES: Saint Basil's cathedral, Moscow
A vast slumbering giant, Russia is one of the most fascinating travel destinations of the 21st century.
The heart of its appeal is in its leading cities. The capital, Moscow, has an ancient past that can be seen through the grand arches of St Basil?s cathedral and a more recent history of Soviet power, with the grandeur of Red Square and the onion-domed skyline of the Kremlin.
It's also alive with the sparkling world of the new Russia, where designer boutiques line busy shopping streets, a dynamic society embracing change and its new contacts with the west. The world of the Tsars lives on in Russia's previous capital, St Petersburg, a treasure-trove of spectacular palaces and vast churches bright with mosaics and the Hermitage Museum. In the winter it's a snowy paradise of horse-drawn sleighs, and it never gets dark through the 'white nights' of summer.
At the far eastern side of Russia you will find spectacular Kamchatka, a peninsula the size of Japan. 29 active craters stretch along its shore and it is home to a stunning diversity of flora, fauna and bird species. Native cultures remain as nomadic fishing and reindeer-herding communities exist unchanged by time.
Chukotka is an area rich in marine life and home of the nomadic Chukchis – descendants of ancient paleosiberian tribes. Here you can observe Chukchi settlers in their umiaks (walrus-skin boats), still practicing a traditional lifestyle. Join A&K's Clipper Odyssey cruise to experience these little-explored areas of Russia.
